Submission Guidelines

CIF seeks original unpublished scholarship—this includes papers developed from conference papers. In the case of a previously presented but as yet unpublished conference paper, an abstract may have been published previously in conference-related material. Please include a brief biography with your submission and also include an abstract in English with keywords. Please submit your manuscripts (following the instruction below) as email attachments to cif@cultureinfocus.org

CIF uses the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed., especially chapters 15 and see 15.31. Please adhere to the “author-date” style. You may include “discursive” (not bibliographic) endnotes if needed to make available to the reader additional, longer or parenthetical information.

Please submit your paper as a Microsoft Word document (.docx) in Times New Roman 12 pt. font with one-inch margins top, bottom, left and right. Double-space the manuscript; single-space the Reference List with double-space between entries. Also note the abstract/keyword list is single-spaced. The title of the paper, followed by your name, a comma, and your affiliation, begins the manuscript in separate lines, then double-space to the abstract/keyword list (“Keywords: x ,y, z, a, b, and c.”), and then double-space to the first paragraph. Justification is to the left margin except for the abstract, which is single-spaced and block-indented roughly half an inch (1.2 cm.) with right and left justification. Paragraphs are indented roughly half an inch (1. 2 cm.) using tabs/margin adjustment, not spaces. List figures and/or tables in order at the end of your manuscript, with captions (i.e., “Figure 1”). Direct your readers to your tables and figures by referring to them in the text by number (e.g., “Table 3 shows . . .” or “See figure 3.”). Page numbers are in 9 pt. font, centered in top header. Page numbers in references: 1–4, 10–12, 14–18, 100–101, 200–210, 301–5; keep the last digit for 101 through 109 and the like (107–9, 202–6) and for three or more non-zero digits keep the last two digits (e.g., 157–59, 2247–56). There is no truncation for single-digit and double-digit numbers. Spacing: No double-space after a period. No space before or after dashes. Use regular dashes for hyphenated words (“red-haired boy”), but use “en-dashes” for ranges of dates (1956–68) and “em-dashes” for breaks in thought (“Before that—and after too—he was happy”). Permissions: As the author, it is your responsibility to obtain any written permission from the copyright holder and to pay to reproduce any copyrighted material (such as artwork, photographs, etc.) and to provide a digital copy of said written permission prior to publication along with the text of a source credit line we can use to identify the source inside CIF. Manuscript length and word count: Suggested target is roughly 5000–9000 words (including references and endnotes). Text should be clearly organized and possess a clear and readable style. If specialized terms or acronyms appear, define them when first used. Culture in Focus has no publication fee or charge for any submitted or accepted articles. There is no article processing charges (APCs). Any article submitted for potential publication in Culture in Focus is sent to review editors having expertise in the relevant area.
